The lower the HERS Index, the more you'll save!
Similar to how MPG tells you the fuel efficiency of a vehicle, the HERS Index indicates the energy efficiency of a home. Each 1-point decrease in the HERS Index corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption compared to a typical new home (ie. a HERS Reference Home with a HERS Index of 100). Thus a home with a HERS Index of 85 is 15% more energy efficient than a typical new home and a home with a HERS Index of 80 is 20% more energy efficient. The lower the number, the higher the savings for home owner. See the diagram below:

The HERS® Index is a registered trademark of the Residential Energy Services Network. The HERS Index rating is unique to a specific floor plan as designed, not as built, using RESNET-approved software, RESNET-determined inputs and certain assumed conditions. The typical new home HERS Index rating of 100 is the RESNET HERS Index reference home, which is built to the specifications of the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code. More information about the HERS Index rating can be found on RESNET's website. The typical resale home HERS Index rating of 130 is a U.S. Department of Energy rating per its EnergySmart Home Scale (SM). (Source: RESNET website www.resnet.us/home-energy-ratings)
